Once we compared scenes though (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 in this case) using the 4K disc via the Panasonic player and its own tone mapping, a closer result was observed between projectors. The native JVC tone mapping available on the NX7 was on another level versus the HDR performance of the other models. The NX7 though really pulled ahead once we dug into 4K HDR content. The NX7, expected given the price differential, was the all-around best performer. The Epson was very bright and offered a bit more menu control and flexibility. The RS540, for example, delivered the best black levels, even edging out the NX7 by a bit. Some subtly excel in specific areas and every model had some minor strength or weakness. In the end, one of the main takeaways that was universally recognized is that all of these models can do some work and put out nice imagery. Nothing in the actual head-to-heads looked this bad/good side-by-side in person. Note that this above picture is an over-exposed, quick, and simple phone shot. It was incredibly fun having such a stacked field of competitors and really seeing the performance. We looked at a variety of elements like sharpness, detail, black level, contrast, and more through a variety of torture test scenes pitting various combinations of projectors against each other. What ensured was a few hours of critical viewing from Interstellar to Mission Impossible and more. Kudos to all the folks that contributed, administered, and were hands-on in the event. Sources were ran through a combination of HDMI splitters to feed multiple projectors at the same time. ![]() ![]() Members made L-shaped velvet stand-ups that we used to block the output of each projector as needed and also allowed for half-and-half display of images simultaneously on the screen. ![]() Instead, we played a variety of 1080p and 4K HDR clips from a Chromecast as well as a Panasonic 4K Blu-ray player. While we had intent to drive the demonstration and comparison via a Kaleidescape Strato, that unfortunately did not come to be.
